The Bently Proximity Sensor is a eddy-current proximity sensor. When the coil at the top of the probe is attached with a high frequency current and is close to a conductive surface, eddy current is generated on the surface of the conductive object due to the magnetic field line of the coil, thus reducing the inductance of the coil. This change in coil characteristics is converted into a DC voltage signal output. The approach sensor system uses a scale factor to convert the system output into a displacement value. Only in the linear range of the system can the displacement value be calculated using the scale factor.
