NI GPIB-140 Fiber Optic GPIB Extender The National Instruments GPIB-140 / GPIB-140A Fiber Optic GPIB Extenders remove the restrictions on cable length and device loading imposed by the IEEE 488 standard while requiring virtually no desktop space.

 

The NI GPIB-140 is a GPIB bus extender that can be used to extend the length of GPIB cables without compromising the integrity of the GPIB system or requiring software modifications. The GPIB-140B can extend the cable length up to one kilometer and the GPIB-140A/2 can extend up to two kilometers.Both devices use a buffered transfer technique to transfer data at rates up to 1.1 Mb/s (IEEE 488.1) or 2.8 Mb/s (HS488).

 

The GPIB-140A/2 can also expand the maximum number of GPIB devices in a system from 15 up to 26. Both devices are compatible with NI GPIB controllers and NI embedded controllers with GPIB ports, and they require an external power supply.

 

To use the NI GPIB-140 with a computer, you need to install the appropriate programming environment, such as NI LabVIEW or Microsoft Visual Studio, and the corresponding drivers. The NI-488.2 driver provides support for NI GPIB controllers and NI embedded controllers with GPIB ports

 

There are some alternative approaches to extending the length of GPIB cables, such as using fiber-optic cables or wireless communication. Here are some pros and cons of these approaches:

Fiber-optic cables: Fiber-optic cables can be used to extend the length of GPIB cables over long distances, up to several kilometers. They are immune to electromagnetic interference and can provide high-speed data transfer rates. However, they require specialized equipment and can be expensive.

This can be useful in situations where running cables is not feasible or desirable. However, wireless communication can be subject to interference and can introduce latency and other performance issues.
